Japan Needs More Counseling Resources

Japan is a relatively safe country that has few homicides and related crimes. However, there are a few murders every year with extremely grisly details, many committed by youths. In these few, gruesome cases, the need for timely counseling is highlighted.

In Japan, counselors and social workers are extremely overworked. As few as 2,500 counselors are available at city offices, with each handling as many as 75 cases alone. Social workers are not well compensated, either, receiving pay similar to that of preschool teachers. One may wonder if Japan is worried about its future when those that shape the future are underpaid and overworked.
