How Children Learn to Read

How do children learn to read? Some learn explicitly, learning word by word, memorizing definition by definition. Some learn implicitly, by understanding word context and use, learning a word’s feeling through reading.

High-level readers learn both ways. But students who struggle with reading may be learning through a single method. These students have clear differences in brain patterns and could need more specialized help.

For teachers, this is a reminder that not everyone learns the same way.
