How do Student Sleep Schedules Change as They Age?

As students go from kindergarten to high school, sleep patterns change quite a lot. School days begin early, around 8-9 AM, and may get earlier as students get older. However, students go to bed at increasingly later times.

In elementary school, children go to bed around 9:30 PM. In high school, children go to bed around 11 PM. These children, although sleepy, stayed awake. Their sleep deficit was made up on weekends, when possible.

As teachers and parents know, sleep is important for performing well on tests and at work. Students who are overworked or fail to get enough sleep perform poorly.

Sleep, after all, is very important!
